Why a Helpline for Jewish children and why is the Jewish Helpline important?

The line currently offers help and support to some 3,000 people a year. It provides a unique service to people who may be feeling lonely, anxious, depressed or suicidal.

Volunteers support people with issues ranging from anxiety and depression to suicidal thoughts and personality disorders and from family matters to social problems; every issue is given the utmost respect and care. Miyad is open Sunday to Thursday midday to midnight, Friday midday to before Shabbat and winter Saturdays after Shabbat.

In November 2004 we are starting a new line for Jewish children to provide a much needed service to the young in our community.

The children’s line will offer Jewish children an outlet for their problems in an understanding and culturally sensitive way. Issues which can arise include bullying, family tensions, eating disorders, worries about friends’ welfare, peer group pressure and serious physical or sexual assault.

The Jewish community frequently receives praise for the way it looks after its own. We need to ensure that we continue to support those who use the service so that they have somewhere to turn when life gets hard.

Quite simply, we cannot operate without funds. We need money to launch JLINE, the Jewish Children’s Helpline – to pay for the local call rate phone number, training, resources, awareness activities, advertising, etc. We believe it is vital to continue providing this important service to those who need it and to extend it to children, but we cannot do so without the generous help of donors. Your support makes an enormous difference.
